Automatic Google Photos backup is now part of ItsDeducted Pro

Automatic Google Photos backup is included with ItsDeducted Pro. Once enabled, the donation photos you submit in ItsDeducted can be saved to Google Photos while the donation record remains organized in ItsDeducted.

That is especially useful for ordinary household donations—clothing, kitchenware, books, toys, home goods, and mixed bags that are easy to give away but much harder to reconstruct from memory months later. Photos remain optional; you can still track donations without using photo backup.

If you want the broader capture workflow, see how photo upload works in ItsDeducted.

Turn on Google Photos backup in a few clicks

Pro users can connect Google Photos from Account → Integrations. You may also see an Enable image backup prompt on the home screen after taking a donation photo.

    1. 1

      Open the Google Photos integration

Go to Account → Integrations, or use the image-backup prompt after taking a donation photo.

    2. 2

      Connect your Google account once

Complete Google’s authorization flow so ItsDeducted can add the donation photos you submit.

    3. 3

      Keep tracking donations normally

Continue adding donations in ItsDeducted. Photo backup happens as part of that workflow rather than becoming a separate filing task.

One donation, one album—and a more complete PDF record

When backup is enabled, ItsDeducted creates a Google Photos album for the donation entry you are working on and keeps the submitted photos grouped with that donation. A clothing drop-off, household-goods drop-off, or furniture pickup can each keep its own visual record instead of becoming a pile of unrelated camera-roll images.

    Google Photos

    Keep the donation photos together

Photos attached to the donation entry are backed up together so the visual documentation stays connected to the donation it supports.

    PDF export

Carry the visual record into the export

Synced photos attached to an individual donation can be included with that donation’s PDF record alongside the item details and estimated fair market values.

For the rest of the export workflow, see how donation export works.

Does the IRS require photos of donated items?

Not as a universal standalone requirement for ordinary household-goods donations. However, the IRS says taxpayers should support valuation with photographs, canceled checks, purchase receipts, or other evidence. Photos can therefore strengthen the record of what you donated and the apparent condition of the property after it has left your possession.

Photos do not replace charity receipts or written acknowledgments, item descriptions, donation dates, fair market value support, Form 8283, or a qualified appraisal when those rules apply. IRS Publication 526 covers charitable-contribution recordkeeping, while IRS Publication 561 covers valuation and additional substantiation requirements.

Documentation, not tax advice: ItsDeducted helps organize records and estimated fair market values. It does not determine whether a deduction is allowable or replace professional tax advice.

For a deeper checklist, see the ItsDeducted donation recordkeeping guide.

What ItsDeducted can—and cannot—access in Google Photos

The integration is configured so ItsDeducted can add the donation photos you submit without read access to your existing Google Photos library. It is designed around the donation content you send through ItsDeducted, not around browsing the photos already in your account.

    ItsDeducted can

Add and organize submitted donation photos

Create an album for a donation, add the photos you submit, and work with ItsDeducted-created donation content.

    ItsDeducted cannot

Browse the rest of your photo library

It does not get read access to your existing Google Photos library and cannot modify or delete the photos already there.

Google exposes separate OAuth scopes for adding content and for viewing a user’s photo library. You can review the current Google Photos authorization scopes and the ItsDeducted privacy policy for more detail.

Google Photos backup is a Pro feature; photos are not required to use ItsDeducted

Free users can still track donations, review estimated fair market values, and generate organized donation records without Google Photos backup. Pro adds automatic Google Photos backup and the ability to include synced photos in individual donation-entry PDF exports.

If you do not want to use photos at all, you can still create donation records by importing a list or adding items manually. See the current ItsDeducted Free and Pro plans for the complete feature breakdown.
